All personal and it all depends on the situation and radar performance.

But, the settings I use 90% of the time is
    North up
    True vector
    Relative motion
    Relative trails
    ARPA on
    AIS display hidden

    I have 2 radars.
The one in sitting at is set to 6nm range with an offset. The other one 12nm range with an offset. I can see both at the same time. The one I’m not sitting at has AIS display on.

When I’m passing close to an Anchorage I’ll set it up as true trails. Because at that point I’m more interested in which ship suddenly starts moving.

But other people like it different. It doesn’t really matter what your settings are. As long as you can see, without using ARPA or AIS, what is going on around you in the blink of the eye.

Like the other poster, I also have two radars and two ECDISs.

Dependent on the situation, my settings would be something akin to:

True North. RM(T). 1.5NM or 3NM(6nm on 2nd radar). Off-center. 6min vector. 1 or 3 min trail. ARPA on whichever target whose trails seem like a potential risk. AIS overlay. Rain/Wave/Gain settings matched to the weather. When naughty, I just let the auto correction system take care of that.
