Questions about gear for a new deck cadet

I’m starting the deck/AB program at Seattle maritime this fall, and I was wondering if y’all had any suggestions regarding the gear we’re supposed to buy before class starts. What we’re specifically supposed to buy is:
-Work pants or overalls
-Work shirt
-Reinforced-toe work shoes or boots
-Jacket for outdoor classroom activities
And for while at sea:
-Base layers (top and bottom)
-Waterproof boots
-Rain jacket
-Rain pants or bibs
-Stocking cap
-Work gloves
-Scarf or neckwarmer

Additionally we need a good pocket flashlight and a good folding pocket knife. For the knife one with a marlinspike is recommended. For the light, I currently use a streamlight micro usb at my current day job as an hourly auto tech – would that be sufficient or should I get something larger?

Anyway tips or suggestions are appreciated, thanks!!

I graduated from SMA back in 2010 so Im not sure if the program has changed much since then. I would suggest some sort of safety Toe boot, a good set of rain gear, long underwear, warm socks, and maybe a pair of carhart pants or overalls for deck work. Get yourself an inexpensive knife and a flashlight and I’d say you’ll be set up just fine.

Feel free to pm me if you have questions.

Yooo I’m just finishing up the deck program at SMA. I would say don’t go out and buy any new gear if you already have work boots, rain gear, and layers. Any pants/jeans you’re fine with getting dirty works. Our underway days are 12 hours and it’s not until January. Also be prepared for COVID dramatically changing how the program will be ran.

If you’re happy with your current flashlight great, they not picky about it. If you already have a folding knife you’re set. Marlinspike isn’t essential. Feel free to message me with any questions
