Mass Maritime info needed (or general maritime academy info)

Ok so its that time where i need to start applying to college and im looking to go to mass maritime (suny is second for me, but in the end ill attend any). Im looking to go in as a marine engineering major because of the availability of careers, but im worried that ill be stuck “in the bowels of the ship”, and although i know theres free time, it would be nice to have some topside work. is this possible for an engineering major?

My advice go where it’s cheapest all roads lead to Rome. As far as working topside that just isn’t where the major systems you work with are located. If you want real topside work deck life may be calling you.

I’m a senior at SUNY. SUNY has the best engineering department based on variety of majors and quality of the degree. In reality, if you’re sailing it doesn’t matter. What school you’re from really only matters when you go shoreside.

Topside engineering work does exist, but the vast majority of licensed engineering jobs have you working in the pit.

Best advice I can give you is to sail as an OS for a little before you spend the absurd amount of money to go to an academy.
