Maritime cadet, looking to switch to deck, also in the national guard

Hi all. I’m a rising sophomore at a state maritime academy, currently in a program other than marine transportation. After the realization that I am wasting my time with my current major, I think I want to move to Marine Transportation.

Problem is, i have a 6 year contract remaining with the MA national guard. If I switch my training to Deck, by the time I graduate, I will probably still have a year left on my contract.

Is working on Tugs a feasible way to use my degree and license, and also be able to properly finish my national guard contract? Are tug schedules consistent enough to not miss drill weekends, especially if it is just for a short time?

Any input on this would be appreciated.

If you don’t have to be at drill more than probably one weekend a month or so I’m sure there’s few companies willing to work with you.
