Looking to move to ships

This is mostly directed at officers on ships. I’m a hawsepiper and have worked up to 3rd mate unlimited. The only thing left to add is oceans and pic/tankerman both will be added by years end.

I’m curious is any of you guys work with hawsepipers on the bridge?

Also what aspect of the industry are you in and what type of schedules do you work? Any parts you would avoid?

Thanks for any info

Hey I’m a cadet but am set to graduate this year with my unlimited 3rd mates license. During my cadet internship I sailed deep sea on a roro and a container ship. My experience with hawespipers is that they are just the exact same as academy grads but extra salty lol. Three men I worked with and all were excellent officers and had the same respect as academy grads. Doesn’t mater how you got your license as long as you’re a competent officer.

Sailed with a few ex ABs who had climbed the ladder, excellent seamen and some great stories from their years at sea. There is no stigma or preference for fresh faced cadets, better a man (or woman) who can do the job on deck as well as overseeing others doing it.

From my experience, hawsepipers are preferred to Academy brats. There’s certain experiences and wisdom that you can’t get in the classroom at a college. No offense, as I am Academy myself
