Looking to go into maritime, is it worth it.

I’m 16 and I’ve been interested in maritime since early middle school, and, until recently was planning on going to a maritime academy, and getting a license as a third mate. However recently I’ve been reading a lot on the Subreddit, and it seems that jobs are a lot rarer than I was lead to believe, and I might not be able to find work at all. That brings me to my question, is it worth going to a four year school to study this, or should I look for another career path.

There’s jobs, especially for tanker mates. If you do go deck side I highly highly reccomend you get your tankerMan PIC so you can work tankers right out of school. Also try to get your towing endorsement as well. With those 2 qualifications you’d have plenty of job options upon graduating

If you have the determination you’ll find your way out there eventually, theres also options other than sailing as an officer right away, such as Piney Point (who are always looking for guys to go deck) feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions.

Where I’m from, the job situation with deck department is pretty shitty and many of my classmates studying to become masters are not likely to become officers let alone masters.
Not saying you shouldn’t if you have the determination, but you might have a long and a rocky road ahead.
On the other hand, the engine department might have more job offers and you’re more likely to become an licenced officer someday.
