Liveaboard Tugboat?

This may sound absolutely mental.

My spouse and I have been looking at a few different tugboats to live on. How feasible would it be? The tugboats we’re looking at are quite old (nearly 100y-o) and have been retired or will be soon. What sort of common problems of seagoing tugboats should we look for? Is it possible to clear the engine room and install a newer and smaller motor? We plan to move into a lake and keep it there.

Very feasible, as long as you have some deep pockets. Hull condition would be my biggest worry, but the only way to get a true idea of the condition of the hull will rack up a bill in the thousands alone with a drydock fee and a good survey measuring steel thickness on multiple points. You will want to go ahead and get a good coat of hull paint on there while out of the water too.

Really hard to recommend what is best for the engine room without knowing what your prospective vessel(s) currently have. I would not recommend a new engine, too much electronics. Changing engines can be complicated especially if the engine speeds are different. Going from an engine that turns 900 RPM full ahead to a smaller engine that turns 1800 RPM full ahead will require a gearbox change as well to keep the existing propeller turning at the same speed.
