Hawspiping?

Hey guys you have been very helpful to some of my questions and I really appreciate it, I just have a couple more questions unfortunately I don’t have the time to go to a maritime academy and have just been getting my TWIC, STCW, and MMC. And plan on just haws piping my way so my question is that if I haws pipe will I eventually get up to a level in the field where people are, that went to a academy? I just want to be able to progress in this career and if it means that you have to go to an academy that’s gonna be a bump in the road I’ll have to come across eventually again any answers are appreciated.

After acquiring 1080 days of sea time on vessels of the correct tonnage you can test for a 3rd mate unlimited which is the same license you would get from an academy. It’s a long and expensive road and sometimes I wish I had just gone to an academy.

If you have questions feel free to pm me.

Yes, if you hawspipe you can reach the level of an academy grad (Third mate Unlimited).

u/AbleSeamonster is right about the cost and time. If you shipped 6 months a year, it’ll take you 6 years to get the seatime (assuming little or none now). And then you’ll have to take all the classes for your [Officer In Charge of a Navigation Watch STCW certificate](https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/NMC/pdfs/checklists/mcp_fm_nmc5_204_web.pdf). I figure it would be around 18-20 weeks of classes.

MITAGS in Baltimore and Seattle has a 28 month Third Mate Unlimited apprenticeship program that you might be interested in. It’s VA approved if you have GI bill benefits.

Been trying to do it myself and honestly I’m about to pull the trigger on an academy. I can’t ship out forever and I’d love to be able to fall back on a business degree I got at academy so that I can eventually move shoreside once I get older.
