Does USCG accept online STCW certifications (is this a thing?)

I’m currently in the process of preparing my MMC application and have a question about completing the Proficiency in Security Awareness course. I took my BST courses through Sea School, however at the time I did them I was not aware that PSA was now required (I only completed Personal Safety, Firefighting, CPR/First Aid, and Personal Survival).

I’m currently working on a ship, and along with everything in the USA being closed right now due to COVID, leaving to go back and take the course in person isn’t really an option. I have seen PSA courses offered online (Marlins, Seven Seas, etc.) but was wondering if these courses actually result in obtaining a certificate that will be accepted as valid by USCG.

Any guidance would be appreciated!

**Yes!** A “Security Awareness” at a minimum is required for all STCW crew members. (The next level up is “Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties”).

**Yes!** the USCG is accepting online classes in the time of Covid. I’m not sure about the schools you mentioned but you should ask their admissions folks if the course is USCG approved.

The good news is *YOU DON’T NEED A CLASS!!* The [checklist](https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/NMC/pdfs/checklists/mcp_fm_nmc5_227_web.pdf) says that a letter from your company is sufficient. If you go that route, get a letter for VPDSD.

Let me know if you have any questions
