Does Canadian companies pay more money because there’s high demand for sailors there?

I’m from Greece and I’ll be moving to Canada soon. I want to be a chief engineer after I finish highschool in Vancouver. I’m not 100% sure if I’m making the right choice here. Greece is a maritime superpower. Yet Canada literally begs people to join the business. I’m not sure which country is the best and my possibilities of finding a company that pays well.

Get your priorities in order then pick- Which companies will pay for education? which companies would you be able to and want to advance within more? Do you want to be based out of Greece or BC? Is the Grecian market being flooded a going to make it harder to advance? If Canadian companies are “begging” for workers you could use that as a bargaining tool in one way or another.

From my understanding of the industry Canadian wages are pretty similar to American wages so you should make quite a bit more sailing Canadian flag compared to Greek.

You will live better in Greece with Maritime salary than in Canada thats for sure. You can save a lot more money in Greece.

I think the bigger question is how will you adapt to living and working in the Canadian culture and climate? Read and watch and listen to lots of different Canadian media. Even starting with some of the Canadian subreddits. Get a variety of Canadian viewpoints. Look at the daily weather for where you’re considering, read the local paper online. Listen to public radio and commercial radio. Watch YouTube videos. Follow Canadian politicians on Twitter. Whatever works, to give you a good insight to the everyday, mundane life in Canada. Learn the flaws, the common attitudes, the quirks, and so on.

Obviously, the more flexible your personality is, the better you’ll adapt to any international move. But before you decide, make sure you know more than the shallow stereotypes.

Think you need to actually look into becoming a ‘Chief Engineer’
You’ll need to do your different tickets first, a engineering cadet ship to start with..
