Did you put a thick enough gasket back in?

What kind of seal does it have? Sometimes pumps are harder to turn with new seals/packing until they get some water in them. Also if it has packing, the packing should be left relatively loose until there is water in the pump. Do you have any pictures of it?

I put the included gasket back on. I am trying to upload a picture to the thread but I can’t seem to figure it out.

Sounds like the fresh water pump with the elbow. It’s an open impeller pump so there is a critical clearance between the impeller and the face of the elbow. There are quite a few water pumps for the 71 series engines ranging from former, current, standard flow, and high flow. The pump elbow does actually need to match the pump type.

Another user mentioned the gasket. The gasket adds to the clearance so the pump may bind up without the gasket installed.

Thanks for the help everyone! Turns out i was shipped a high output pump. Apparently the impeller sits deeper in the low output pump? Which would give me the needed clearence to avoid binding up.
